How Can Lower Back Injury Pain Be Treated?

Hi. Just a week ago I injured my lower back. I finally went to the er Saturday because I could not handle the pain anymore. After some X-rays the doc says he believes I sprain a ligament. Well I'm just wondering when will the pain start to fade? And also tonight I felt a warm sensation in my whole lower back area, is that bad? Thank you for any answers.
