Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have lymphedema. Seeing my doctor for the first time Wednesday. In the meantime my leg is leaking a lot of fluid . I am using gauze bandages and I will sleep with a pad under my leg to absorb. The leg is leaking more now than in ER a few days ago I have a history of many MRSA infections and I am not sure what to use to keep MRSA out until I see my doctor. Or even how to properly bandage, since it has to be changed so often.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Maninder's Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
As per mentioning of your condition, you should wrap the bandages more tightly around the end of the extremity and wrapped more loosely toward the trunk, so that lymph flow is out of the extremity and towards the center of the body. Better idea is to use pneumatic compression devices, since in these pressure is applied in intervals that is very important for effective pumping of lymph and to avoid any pressure symptoms. You should invest in a good one. Apart from that, you can gently message the area to encourage lymph flow. You can apply pressure and release it periodically manually, also over the bandages. Please do take care of the skin as this condition may cause skin to have erosion and various kind of excoriation. The last resort of treatment is surgery.
So, if the problem goes out of whack, please prepare your mind for this modality.
Hope this helps. Hoping for your good health.
Thanks.
