How Can Nausea And Vomiting While Suffering From Gastroparesis Be Treated?

My 35 year old daughter who lives with her mother has been prescribed oral Reglan. She has gastrophoresis and requires a Medronix bladder stimulator. However she is plagued by vomiting and nausea. My daughter won t take the medicine because of the awful side effects based upon her mother s investigation of the drug. My daughters quality of life is extremely poor in her current state. Any thoughts or other similar drugs? Peter Weir

Hello,

Metochlorpramide as any other medication has the risk for side effects but is quite safe to take in normal dose (not repeating doses after vomiting). I would say that if the doctor has prescribed the drug it is quite safe to take up to 3 tablets a day. Domperidone is a similar drug that helps with nausea and vomiting and you may try this in the place of Metochlorpramide. Your daughter should take oral rehydration solution and use frequent small amount to avoid fluid and electrolyte loss. She should also eat frequent small amounts to avoid full stomach at a time and increase risk for nausea and vomiting. BRAT diet (banana, rice, apple, toast) may be tried and some white plane soups, avoiding fatty fried food or food that she finds irritate her stomach. If you think that she still is not getting enough fluids or is not keeping in her enough of the fluids she drinks she needs to be seen by a doctor to evaluate her for dehydration and in some cases intravenous fluids might be needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
