Hello,
Thankyou for the query and welcome to healthcare magic.

If a patient comes to me with these symptoms I would like to know more details like
-How long have you been having the symptoms?
-When did traumatic event happen and nature of trauma?
-Episodes of reliving through the trauma
-Recurring anxiety about these thoughts and episodes of panic attacks
-Frequently trying to avoid these thoughts
-frequency of nighares
-Associated sadness, depressed feeling, hopelessness, feeling of guilt ,suicidal thoughts etc
-weight changes, Appetite changes.

All these questions are trying to look for Post traumatic Stress disorder, as the symptoms you are suggesting are indicative of PTSD.

PTSD patients will have recurring nightmares and difficultly sleeping. But prolonged use of sleeping pills and benzodiazepines are not recommended, as your body can develop tolerance and you will need higher doses which is potentially dangerous. These medications also cause problems with addiction.

The medication of choice for treating PTSD and anxiety episodes are a class of medication called SSRIs (Selective Serotonin reuptake inhibitors ).There are several medication in this class of medication. You need to consult a primary care physician / Psychiatrist as soon as possible so that your doctor can do a thorough evaluation, and choose a medication best suited for you. Your doctor will also recommend Psychotherapy along with medications.

Hope I was able to answer your questions
Please feel free to address any more concerns
Regards,
Dr.Lekshmi
