Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a 6 years old son. He had his first nose bleeds years ago after he took medicines for his tics. He started having tics after his vaccine shots. Although his tics was gone after taking medicines. He began bleeding quite often months after he took those medicines. He never had nose bleeds since birth even before his vaccine shots. Until 3 years old he was a healthy boy only after he had vaccines the problem started. So I was worried that it might be the side effect of the medicines he took for his tics. I took him to the doctor in my country to ask for help to make the bleeding stop. He had nasal spray and avamys( nasal spray suspension) for nose bleeds but it didnt work. He bled after 1 to 2 after weeks of taking nasal spray or avamys. I took him to europe to have a check up why the bleeding continued even after taking nasal sprays. I thought the doctor will cauterize him but he said he was too young. He said I will just put an ointment to my sons nose for one week. I thought that it stopped permanently but it came back after 1 1/2 month since I applied the ointment to my son. So now I m not sure what to do to make it stop permanently. How long can I give him the ointment? I just put the ointment when he bleeds but if he doesn t have it I don t give him at all. At what age can he have the surgical electric cautery? I m worried that he s loosing a lot of blood because of his nose bleeds. Do you know someone to contact to help us stop my sons nosebleeds? We are from Philippines but we will try to get to any country to treat my sons nosebleeds.
Little's area is the usual site for epistaxis or nose bleed in children and is located at the anterior-inferior part of nasal septum (site of vascular plexus). Most nose bleeds stop spontaneously in a few min with simple measures like pinching the nose between thumb and index finger for 5 minutes, external ice-pack compression.
During the winter, or in a dry environment, a room humidifier, saline drops, and petrolatum (Vaseline) applied to the septum may help to prevent epistaxis. If a bleeding site is identified, its obliteration by cautery with silver nitrate or electro-cautery may prevent further difficulties. No definite age bar is in the literature. For this procedure one need not travel far and wide.
Hope I have answered your query.
