How Can Nuchal Fluid Causing Pregnancy Problems Be Treated?

Hello Dr. Chetana, I am 11 weeks 2 days pregnant. I had spotting when I was 9 weeks 4 days pregant, after an interanal scan they detected a blood clot outside the sac which was not deemed significant. However, the nuchal fluid was 2.54 mm thick and I was told that the pregnancy could be bad. I had suffered from mild UTI and throat infection for a couple of days. I am 29 years old (will turn 30 in 25 days). I am on thyronorm (increased from 75 mg to 100 mg). I had suffered from optic neuritis in 2004, but my opthomologist has certified it to be only viral infection and not related to MS ( I do not have any other symptoms). My gynecologist said the pregnancy could be bad and I should be ready for termination, I am in an emotional turmoil and need your advice. Please help me.... Thank you in anticipation.

Hi,

Please don't panic.
An increased Nuchal thickness at 11 weeks ,implies a higher chance of a anomalous baby .But it's just a chance.Further test will be required to know if the fetus is fine or not.You have to remember is any ultrasound is just to help identify and its not a definite thing.Further blood test to know the serum PAPPA and Beta HCG levels ,will help us know ,if further testing Like CVS or amniocentesis will be required or no.
You are just 29 years. That means your age related chance of having an Down's baby is quite low.None of the other thing's in your history look like to cause a long term problem in your baby.
Please relax and get your PAPPA and hcg done ,and get them to calculate the risk of Downs based on all three,if it's more than 1 in 150 ,then please go to a fetal medicine expert for further management.
Anxiety will affect your health.Just do the tests and relax.

Hope this helps.
Regards.
