How Can Numbness In The Fingers Be Treated?

HI my name is Mary. I had carpel tunnel surgury on my right hand the end of October. They said I had severe nerve damage. Well at this point the numbness is still in my first three fingers. Will this go away with more time? Or can this be permanent in my situation and is their something that can be used in the healing of the scar tissue at the place of the incision? Thanks Mary Messano

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query. I am Dr. Rommstein, I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can.
Hand numbness is usually caused by damage, irritation or compression of one of the nerves or a branch of one of the nerves in your arm and wrist.Diseases affecting the peripheral nerves, such as diabetes, also can cause numbness, although with diabetes similar symptoms usually occur first in your feet.
However, your symptoms indicate that there is compressive neuropathy which is seen in carpal canal syndrome or cubital syndrome. You need to do EMG first to confirm diagnosis and then it can be treated with local steroid shots or surgical decompression. Also, physical therapy may be beneficial.
I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time.
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
