How Can Numbness In The Fingers Be Treated?

My husband just had cervical spine surgery between C3, C4 and C5. He had numbness in his fingers, loss of balance, pain in his shoulders and down his arms and jolts of nerve pain through his whole body. His surgery was Jan 3 so it has been about 10 weeks. He has worn a cervical hard collar since then and some of the symptoms have lessened but his fingers are still so numb. He has been having constant PT and OT but it hasn t helped. Do you think this could ever be reversed? Is there any pain management process that can help him. He s a young active man and I hope that his fingers will return to normal. Thank you, Blaine Gorelik

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The symptoms mentioned by you - loss of balance, pain shoulders and running down the arms could be due to compression of cervical spine.
Cervical spine compression can be managed by pain killers and physiotherapy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
