How Can One Stop Bleeding Tonsils While Suffering From Mono?
My son was just diagnosed with mono. His tonsils were so swollen, he was having a hard time swallowing and had shortness of breath. He went to Urgent Care yesterday morning and they injected him with 8000 mg of steroids. Is that a normal dosage? His tonsils have gone down quite a bit. I was curiously how long the steroids would last? He just texted me that his tonsils are bleeding a bit now. Is that normal?
There are different kinds of steroids that are given in different doses, but I am not aware of any steroids that would be given at a dose of 8000 mg or 8 grams, that is a very high dose. Normally a single injection of steroids would have affect for 1-2 days.
Bleeding from the tonsils would not be expected, and if it is more than just a small amount, I would suggest he get evaluated to make sure there isn't something else going on.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Aaron Branch,
