How Can Osteoarthritis And Stiffness In The Knees Be Treated?

I have osteoarthritis (OA) Grade 3 left knee Grade 4 right knee. I have been using bilateral treatment for three years with no results. I HAVE NO PAIN IN EITHER KNEE - REPEAT NEVER HAD ANY PAIN. My problem is both my knees are very stiff...even going off a curb is difficult. I have therapy once or twice a week and feel somewhat better. I am 79 years old and in excellent health. I am 5 ft and weigh 123 lbs. I was just tested at Life Line Screening and given a clean bill of health. Would knee replacement correct OA? My parents were both walkers into their late 80 s. Thank you!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Some patients with pretty severe OA luckily do not have a lot of pain. With the severity of the OA then it may be that a knee replacement would improve your stiffness. I suggest that you find an orthopedic doctor that you trust and get their opinion.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
