How Can Osteoporosis Be Treated While Suffering From Breast Cancer?

I am 52 years old and have had breast cancer. I just found out I have osteoporosis and it has been recommended I see a rheumatoid doctor and take prolia. Looking at this medication there seem to be so many side effects. I consider myself young and healthy. The only reason this happened is because of the chemo I was on at age 45. Do you have any suggestion?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

According to my opinion tamoxifen can be used in your case. As you stated you had breast cancer, and already had treatment for it. It reduces the rate of cancer in contralateral breast along with improvement in bone mass as well as a lipid profile.

Your rheumatoid doctor prescribed you Prolia. As per my opinion alendronate, weekly can be used. Precaution you should take while taking alendronate. Take it with a full glass of water. Don't lie down or take food for at least for 30 minutes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Hiren Hirpara
