Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 88 yr old mother was diagnosed with late stage ovarian cancer. Has had three rounds of carboplatin and taxol for a total of 9 treatments. She is very ill and weak due to chemo and now has to have surgery in a few weeks. Plus another 3 rounds of chemo afterwards. Is the remission rate worth her going through this debilitating regimen at her age?
Chemotherapy may be effective in controlling disease however you are very right to ask whether it should be given or not in such patients. Some times the benefit may not be there and the damage may be more then benefit.
So you can discuss this issue with the health team whether this chemotherapy would control her disease. However the decision would solely lie in hands of the patient and the team managing her. You can just discuss the option with them.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman, General & Family Physician
