How Can Ovarian Cancer In A Mentally Challenged Person Be Treated?
My friend who is 75 yrs. old and mentally challenged was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer ,it has metastasized to abdomen and rectum ,she was drained once and will start chemo in one week.Do you think she should be treated for quality of life instead of quantity. After chemo she will have surgery,if she makes it through the chemo. Please let me know what you think.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
* As per my clinical experience, the current presentation suggests a bizarre situation for relatives taking care of the patient.
* As per the description the cancer is in advanced stage with metastasis, where the treatment will be only palliative and not curative.
* In our clinic, we counsel relatives of the patient for all details of possible outcome, morbidity, mortality associated with the same and then after group discussion, arrive at any particular point of agreement to treat the same.
Wish this information will help you. Do feel free to ask further doubts.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
