How Can Pain And Hematomas On The Buttocks Be Treated?

My husband has had several falls, usually landing on his backsideresulting in quite severe pain across the buttocks with massive purple bruising covering the area side to side and down the back of the right thigh. There are also hematomas at the base of the right buttock and on the bruised thigh area. The only advice we ve been given is to ice it and rest --difficult to accomplish when he s sitting or lying on his back. He says he cannot lie on his stomach which would relieve the pressure on the area and allow ice to be placed across the areas. I have some Voltaren gel left from a foot problem and have read some people have gotten relief using it for this kind of condition. Should I give it a try and if so for how long? He says massaging the area helps but I don t know whether that s a good idea. I ve been warned these hematomas could either break into clots or calcify into a permanent lump and don t want that happening.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
The use of voltaren gel will be good.It is a local pain medication. However, given the fact that he also has bruises around the hematomas , an infection should be prevented.I will suggest you see the Doctor to examine the bruises and judge the need for antibiotics.A systemic pain medication like ibuprofen may also help if the pain too serious.I will also recommend good hygiene around the genitals and buttocks.Ice packs may reduce pain occasionally.Too much massage should however be avoided as the hematomas will resorp on there own not through massage.
Hope my answer will help you
Best regards
