How Can Pain And Itching On The Leg Due To Bug Bite Be Treated?

It s probably nothing, but I have a small bug bite on my leg. It was super itchy! But after I scratched for a while, pain would occur. This morning at about 6:30 to 7:00 am, I scratched it and some skin or pink scab came off. A bit of liquid came out but less than a drop. At about 10:00 am, it was scabbing dark around the edges. And now At 10 PM It has entirely scabbed black. I picked it off as a habit and it s just a light pink color.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my surgical experience, the pain and itching on the leg due to bug bite suggests inflammatory changes at the bite site. The light pink area suggests recovering healthy granulation tissue underneath.

My guidelines at present:
- Local application of ice 5 minutes each 3 times a day
- Anti-histamine as diphenhydramine or cetrizine
- Analgesic as ibuprofen or diclofenac which will serve to abolish the pain as well as reduce the underlying inflammation
- In certain cases, there can be need of sterile saline dressing and rest of the cases are treated with open wound application of myconazole powder for faster recovery
- Decision to use systemic antibiotics with or without steroids is sole authority of examining consultant as per his or her clinical experience

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
