Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can Pain And Swelling Above The Ankle Be Treated?
My 12 year old rolled her ankle in gymnastics. She and her coach heard a sound when she fell. It was a low impact move. There is little to no swelling. It hurts above the ankle. It is very tender to touch and she can’t put weight on it. Should I bother taking her in and where should I take her if I do. I’m afraid the GP won’t know anything. My only other option is ER or urgent care. Most likely they are going to say it’s a low grade high sprain, stay off of it for a few days. My other problem is I don’t know how to immobilize it properly. Will they give her something? I’ve looked and can’t find anything but a walking boot. But she can’t walk on it,so that seems heavy and useless.
If it is very tender and she cannot bear weight on it, I would advise you must see a doctor, and getting an x-ray done to be sure that there is no minor fracture. Emergency room (ER) will be the best option.
Stabilizing it with a backslap will also better be decided there after seeing the x-ray. We also advise cold application along with paracetamol and ibuprofen to such patients for some time. Rest is necessary as well.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
