How Can Pain And Swelling In The Ankle Be Treated?

During the weekend I fell off a platform into a dip and heard my foot crack or pop or whatever. It hurt so so bad and I limped my self to a chair and sat there for a few minutes I got back and continued to move around like I was doing but with a limp. The next day I woke up and couldn t even put weight on it I gradually go to the the point where I could bear weight but with a limp. My ankle is swollen but it went down a little but I just want to know what happened. Oh and now it hurts if I just move it the wrong way.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and welcome to `Ask A Doctor` service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advise.

* As per my surgical experience, the pain and swelling in the ankle
seems to be post traumatic hematoma formation.

* My guidelines at present

- Application of ice pack 3-4 times a day.
- Elevation of the foot over 3 pillows when resting.
- Avoid direct pressure baring as much as possible.
- Tablet ibuprofen ( 400 mg ) 3 times a day after meals.
- Keep a close observation of the swelling, overlying skin changes, any
discharge over the area, fever or else.

* Follow up about the progress after 48 hours.

Wish you fine recovery.
Thank you.
