How Can Pain And Swelling In The Knees Be Treated?

I was injured seven years ago. I broke my tibia and destroyed my knee on the right leg. My knee had already had two ACL reconstructions, and a meniscus tear repair. I wore an immobilizer boot while the tibia was healing and ended up developing blood clots, and peripheral neuropathy. The neuropathy is in the right leg, and is kicking my ass. The pain and swelling is severe. The doctor I have been seeing has done nothing. I need a new doctor. Should I ice the leg, or do something to help relieve the swelling? What is the recommended pain relief for this condition? Any help/recommendation would be appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

First of all it's sad to know what you had been going through lately. Based on the history you have shared, measures like cold compresses may not be enough and OTC analgesics like acetaminophen or Ibuprofen can be used meanwhile as pain seems to be severe. However, if pain persists despite these measures more potent analgesics like Tramadol or Gabapentin may also be needed. A detailed orthopedics review is needed and X-rays of affected joints may also be needed to be done. Local inflammation or pain can get help with warm compresses now since in absence of bruising cold compresses may exacerbate the bone pain. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
