How Can Pain Behind The Heels Be Treated?

I recently sustained an injury to what I assume to be my Achilles tendon in my left leg. The pain is mostly centralized to the top of the back of my heel. It sometimes radiates to the outer back of my ankle and lower outer foot. The injury was sustained during a softball game. I don t recall a specific incident but just feeling the strong pain. I believe it was after sprinting to make a catch. I have had incidents in the past where I d feel a pop in my Achilles tendon followed by short but severe pain. I currently can t do a calf raise on that leg or get off of my heel. I walk with a noticeable limp (but can walk with a struggle) and have a hard time going up or down stairs. The pain isn t constant, such as while resting, but is felt with pretty much any weight bearing and is more severe with any kind of movement that (should) involves lifting my heel off of the ground. I currently don t have health insurance so I m not quite sure what to do. Is this something that sounds like it can go away with time? Any home treatments I should be doing? Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It's very important to do the following steps:
1- You need to consult an orthopedist in the nearest medical center for clinical assessment as well as other important tests to exclude fracture ( X-ray of the foot ).
2- Rest your joint, by avoiding extreme activity.
3- Take over the counter analgesics such as Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen. 4- Apply cold compressors to the joint.
5- Apply topical drugs such as Diclofenac Gel.
6- Supportive devices such as Elastic braces.

I hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you have any further questions.
Take care.
