How Can Pain In The Ankles Be Treated?

I broke my ankle some 9 weeks ago and needed to have a plate and pins fitted. I have had my first physio app yesterday and been told to go down to one crutch, however it is extremely painful to walk on it so am wondering if I can take pain relief for a short while.
