How Can Pain In The Ears Be Treated?

I went to the doctor yesterday with a terrible cold, running nose, cough, and painful ear twinges. He said the ear did not look infected and recommended I use nasal saline spray in my nose. This did not help my ear at all, and I was unable to sleep all night with the ear ache. I put some saline solution in the ear, and that eased the pain a little, but no enough to overcome the pain. This morning I got up, heated and put some old 0ver-the-counter drops for irritated ears in my ear, and that has eased the pain a little. I wear an inner ear hearing aid and can t help but wonder if I scratched my ear. Years ago, I irritated my ear by stuffing Kleenex in it and got help by topical application of an antibiotic cream. What should I do?

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

As you have terrible cold, runny nose and cough, it can cause fluid accumulation behind the eardrum that can cause bacterial and viral overgrowth causing pain and congestion in ears..

As the cold will subside it is most probably possible that earache will also get better..

So my suggestion to you is to take symptomatic treatment for upper respiratory tract infection that is in general terms known as Common cold.

As of now you can start with supportive treatment to relieve the symptoms like:
Gargle with a warm saline solution that is by mixing 1 teaspoon salt in a glass of water and warm it to make a luke warm solution..
Take a combination of decongestant like Phenylephrine, mucolytic like Ambroxol and anti allergic levocetrizine and another combination of Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen..
Take cough expectorant containing Gueifenesin and cough suppressant containing Dextromethorphan.
Chew a Vitamin C pellet daily..
Use analgesic and antibiotic ear drops and decongestant nasal sprays..
Do steam inhalations, avoid spicy and chilled foods, sip on warm water throughout the day do warm compresses over chest..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
