Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mother is 86 yrs old and has just been diagnosed w/bone-on-bone in the groin area hip pain. The orthopaedic she saw today would do nothing for her except to use a walker . She is healthy, with no other issues. No cortisone shots, no hip surgery because of her age, no medication for the #10 pain. Any suggestions ??
I agree her age more do give only palliative therapy but do not know why they cannot give steroids shots, painkillers or any nerve blocks to sustain that pain. My humble suggestion is to go to a pain clinic.
This clinic run by anesthesiologist specialized in pain medicine. They do procedures and prescribe drugs which give some relief. I have seen many orthopedic who do go for surgery at 86 also. I personally have given anesthesia to 100-year-old guy for some hip surgery.
So if you get one consultation with another orthopedic and try to risk life and get it fixed up is also worth taking a decision. So access the pros and cons of the situation and take better decision for your mom.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Archana
