How Can Pain In The Knees Be Treated?

I had a saddle pulmonary embolism back in 2005 after falling on stairs. I didn t think anything of it other than my knee hurt and I went back upstairs to get my car keys and went to a friends house. I flew back and forth from Tampa to Colorado Springs where I was on assignment at the time and after the 3rd week I told my PCP that it still hurt. He thought it was still a bad sprain but to have an MRI done. It turned out I had broken some bones in my knee. I went to an orthopedic Dr. who put a brace on it. I didn t go to Colorado that week because I couldn t figure out how to handle everything I usually did. I did go back the week after with a wheel chair and 2 connecting flights. I ended up in the hospital after 3 days and spent a week in the CICU. I thought I had the flu. Before Hurricane Irma I was filling water bottles and not knowing one was leaking stepped backwards and my left foot hit the water and I went down hyper-extending my left leg. I ve not been feeling great and feel like my asthma is not beeing well controlled but it occurred to my last night that I could be looking at another embolism. I have a bruise on my left leg that travels from my crotch to my knee and when I extend it there is significant pain and the muscle feels like a rope. Should I be concerned about an embolism and what kind of Dr. should I go to?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per my surgical experience, there seems possibility of cruciate ligament or collateral ligament tear during hyper extension of the leg.

I strongly recommend to get an MRI of the knee with your Ortho specialist rather than being worried for pulmonary embolism.

Wish you fine recovery and health.

Regards.
