How Can Pain In The Lower Back Be Treated?

I m female, 64 and in good health. Yesterday I picked up and moved wood to split. I ve done this chore for years, however...after mulching leaves and mowing today....my lower back is very uncomfortable. Yeah, I know I m older blah blah. Would ice be better than heating pad? Or maybe Ben Gay? If I can find any here. Just took two aspirins. Thanks, Jillene in Elizabeth, Indiana

Hi,

For acute back pain, heat would be better to try to prevent muscle spasms. Other than this, massage and back exercises (webmd.com has some good examples) can be used.

For medications, you can use Ibuprofen (as long as you don't have any contraindications such as history of stomach ulcers or kidney problems) and Tylenol.

If the pain is still not controlled you may need to see a doctor and possibly get a muscle relaxer. Usually back pain like yours will resolve usually within a month or so, and hopefully that will be the case for you.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
