Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I started experiencing panic and anxiety episodes in July 2017 and was put on venlafaxine 75mg. It took about 8 weeks for my body to adjust to it. I recently found out I was pregnant and my doctor wants me to stop taking my medication. I am absolutely terrified. Just thinking about having another “episode” is stressing me out to the max. Can I continue taking the medication while pregnant and breastfeeding? I’m in desperate need of a second opinion.
Antidepressants in pregnancy usually not indicated because they may cause birth defects in the newborn like PPH, miscarriage, heart defects, preterm labor, low birth weight etcetera. But if you're severely depressed and feeling anxious, you may take below antidepressants under your doctor guidance. It includes fluoxetine, citalopram, sertraline, amitriptyline, desipramine, nortriptyline, and bupropion etcetera.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu
