How Can Paronychia On The Thumb Be Treated?

Hello, I am 99% sure I have Paronychia on my thumb. I had the same issue about 10 months ago and this was the diagnosis. Same symptoms this time. I believe this one might be caused by pulling on a hangnail. It has been this way for about three weeks and for a bit last week I thought it was getting better. Seems like it has become warmer and more swollen this week. Question: Can Paronychia, if this is indeed what it is, be healed on it s own or only with medicine? If medicine, what is given? I can t seem to remember. Just trying to decide if I could continue to let it heal on it s own or am I making it worse. Thank you for your help. - Melissa

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

If you are having recurrent attacks of paronychia, it is better to go for drainage to remove pus and debris to prevent further attacks and completely eliminate all infection. Consult a general surgeon and start a short course of antibiotics preferably Amoxicillin/Clavulanate combination. If there is collection, better to get it drained. it can be done easily under local anesthesia.

Hope I have answered your query.
