Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, I have pericoronitis, I was put on penicillin 1 day ago and have taken them accordingly to the directions. How long will it take for the pain and swelling to go down? Is it normal for blood pressure to drop a little bit (usually 118/78 but now 104/72).
First of all , I would like to tell you that the blood pressure readings are not drastically variable so there is nothing to panic but still keep a watch on your blood pressure readings and if the diastolic blood pressure continue to fall immediately consult an Emergency room..
Now about your problem:
Pericoronitis is the inflammation of gum flap around molar tooth and it is commonly due to inflammation of gum flap over the wisdom tooth. Penicillin can help in reducing infection but it will take around 5-7 days but to reduce pain and inflammation faster you need to take anti inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen, Naproxen etc. Also gargle with warm saline solution and Chlorhexidine or betadine mouthwash. If there is swelling on cheek do cool compresses..
Hope this helps..
Regards..
