How Can Persistent Cough Be Treated?

I have had a persistent cough over the last 6 days. It s dry for the most part but when productive, and very little, the results are clear. Temperature has been up and down. At one point I thought I was better (Saturday) so we went out shopping and I started feeling bad again. Temp rose to 102F. However, it has stayed between 99F and 100F since then. No real chest pain to speak of save for the soreness of coughing. Been resting, taking fluids, and trying meds, which have had some effect but can t seem to break barrier. I am somewhat better than I was - have taken Mucinex (12 hour 600mg of Guaifenesin) as well as Coricidin HBP two tabs every 4 hours, total 400 Guaifensen (my BP tends to be elevated but am currently on lifestyle maintanence rather than meds). My essential question is should I be going for stronger meds or just being patient and letting this pass. I rarely get this sick and when I do, recover more quickly. I just want to be sure I m not flirting with something more serious than I suspect. Thank you!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, thanks for your question in HCM. Sorry to hear about your symptoms.
As you said your cough is persistent for past 6 days and the temperature is up and down, it is better to consult with your local doctor to check if there is any upper or lower respiratory tract infection. Only with history it is difficult to come to a diagnosis. However to reduce the cough, you can try warm saline gargling 2-3 times everyday, drinking luke warm water, steam inhalation, taking some antihistamine, antiallergic tablet and avoiding cold foods.
Get well soon.
