How Can Pharyngeal Reflex Be Treated?

Hi, I have a very sensitive gag reflex, I m a 10-15 a day smoker (tobacco roll ups with menthol tip) it used to happen about 2 years ago and stopped, now it seems to have come back with avengance, it mostly happens after or during smoking a cigarette but it s becoming increasing common when I try to swallow saliva, even when not smoking, tonight I bought myself some new boxing gear as I m getting back into the sport, when I moulded the gum shield to my mouth it made me gag uncontrollably to the point where I had to take it out, it seemed having it just in my mouth made me create a lot of saliva and gag, how can I avoid this?
