How Can Pityriasis Rosea Be Treated?

i was diagnosed with pityriasis rosea by my family doctor. He said it would go away in 4-6 weeks. It did not. I went to a dermatologist who took two biopsies. It was not a fungus, not insects, but no diagnosis. After many creams, some over $400, and no difference, the doctor thought it was psoriasis, but since she was retiring she didn t want to start me on oral mediacation. She referred me to another doctor who could not see me for 4 month. In May the rash disapperared. It returned in Aug. and left in October. It returned again in Dec., worse that before. I will try the new dermatalogist, but I won t be able to get in until late Feb. Any suggestions as to what to ask the lab people to look for in my next biopsy?

hi sir/madam,
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.

Lifestyle and home remedies:-

The following tips may help relieve the discomfort of pityriasis rosea:

1. Take over-the-counter allergy medicine (antihistamines). These include diphenhydramine (Benadryl, others).

2. Bathe or shower in lukewarm water.

3. Take an oatmeal bath. You can find oatmeal bath products at your pharmacy.

4. Apply a moisturizer, calamine lotion or an over-the-counter corticosteroid cream.

Treatment:-

In most cases, pityriasis rosea goes away on its own in four to 10 weeks. If the rash doesn't disappear by then or if the itching is bothersome, talk with your doctor about treatments that can help. The condition clears up without scarring and usually doesn't recur.

Medications:-

If home remedies don't ease symptoms or shorten the duration of pityriasis rosea, your doctor may prescribe medicine. Examples include:-

Corticosteroids
Antihistamines
Antiviral drugs, such as acyclovir (Zovirax)

Light therapy:-

Exposure to natural or artificial sunlight may help the rash fade. Light therapy may cause lasting darkening in certain spots, even after the rash clears.

hope this was helpful.
