Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My granddaughter was born 1 week ago and they are saying that she has a small hole in her heart valve. She is also being treated for B strep. She has fluid in her lungs and is being fed through a tube, and is being given oxygen 1 ltr. She sat in the birth canal for 27 hrs before they decided to go with a c-section. We have alot of questions but don t seem to be getting a straight answers. We are scared and confused. Any answers would really help.
Pleural effusion is the collection of fluids in the layer surrounds your granddaughter's lung, which in her case mostly caused by her heart condition. The risk depends on whether the effusion in one side or in both sides, quantity of the fluid and when it's diagnosed before the birth or after. If it's found after the birth, the most common treatment is called a thoracentesis, a procedure in which a needle is inserted into the pleural space and the fluid is drawn out into a syringe,to help your baby to breathe better and to examine the fluid. I understand your concern but I suggest that you trust your doctors because they're better know your granddaughter's condition.
Hope I answered your question Wish your granddaughter a speedy recovery Best regards Dr. Noor Farid
