How Can Post Nasal Drip And Cough Be Treated?

As I sleep at night, my sinus seems to drain and the next morning I cough up mucus for hours. Is there something I can take at night or in the morning to loosen it and make it easier to cough up. It s now after 4 PM & I m still coughing. I m 87 yrs. old and this complaint seems to be getting worse. Thank you for your answer, Marny

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thank you for asking HCM.

I have gone through your query. Your problem can be due to laryngopharyngeal reflux . This can give irritation to throat and cause post nasal drip. I would suggest taking proton pump inhibitors like esomeprazole ( Nexium ) for long term like 6 weeks for this. Give 2 hours gap between your dinner and bed time. Avoid spicy and fatty foods, coffee, milk tea and alcohol. You can have ginger tea or chamomile tea. Raise your head end more with extra pillows while sleeping. These measures will be helpful.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
