Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome Be Treated?
My daughter has been diagnosed with POTS. The treatment does not appear to be effective (Steroid and Anti-depressant). She still is very hot all the time - she has a air conditioner running in her room full time; it can keep ice from melting overnight it s so cold. She passes out with just about any jolt her system (pain, heat, stress, etc) They have checked her thyroid and it s okay but I m wondering if we should look to get an Endocrinology consult. She missed the last two months of school and we don t think things will change when school starts again.
Hello, Welcome and thanks for your query. I understand your concern. POTS is of unknown etiology and may require different approaches for a solution. Some times pressure stockings , excess salt in the diet and fludrocortisone, a mineralocorticosteroid may help. An endocrinology consultation may help in detecting conditions like Addison's disease. If you can provide me her clinical picture with details of symptoms, investigations and treatments tried so far, I would be able to help some other approach. If she does not have depresseion or intense anxiety, anti depressants may not help and may add to the dizziness. Do get back to me if you need any further clarification or have more queries.
