How Can Profound Depression Persisting For 10 Years Be Treated?

I have profound depression from a traumatic event 10 years ago. I feel hopeless and am unable to function in a normal life. Instead of time softening this event it remains the same on a daily basis. The only reason I have not committed suicide is my animals need me. I have been on Zoloft but stopped it after some years due to side effects. I now take Ambien and Ativan. Numbs the pain but the terror is still there
