How Can Recurrent Hemorrhoids Be Treated?

Hi. I have rather large external hemorrhoids (one resembles and is the size of a piece of chewed gum and the other is the size of a pea). I have had 3 hemorrhoidectomies in 8 years and each time it has reappeared within 2 months of surgery. I am at my wit s end for solutions. I have a fiber rich diet, I exercise and drink water. I am regular and never constipated. Nor do I strain unecessarily. Why could this be recurring??? My proctologist would like me to come in for a fourth surgery. It makes me feel like a reincarnated lamb going to the slaughter again. This is a very painful surgery!! What is your opinion on what to do next?

Hello and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your complain Hemorrhoids are inflamed and swollen veins that are formed when there is continuous irritation of the veins present in the rectum area and inflammation can lead to pain and bleeding during bowel evacuation..

As three times it has recurred then better try with conservative therapy like:

-Application of steroid and numbing ointment like Anovate ointment..
-Sitz bath that is sitting in warm water tub especially after bowels....
-High fibre diet along with laxatives like Polyethylene glycol and stool softeners like Docusate to maintain proper bowels..
-Avoid spicy food and drink plenty of water..

-In case of no improvement with medical treatment you can be advised surgical procedures like Rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy or Hemorrhoidectomy that is surgical removal of the hemorrhoids..

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
