How Can Rheumatoid Arthritis Be Treated?

Can anything be done for an 86-year-old woman who has rheumatoid arthritis since age 32 and her hip bones have disintegrated that she cannot have surgery to replace her hip when she fell the there was nothing left to attach the leg to so they had to put a plate on the one side and she is immobile The other hip is now disintegrating and she is in terrible pain but she is not able to have surgery the doctor said she would never make it and there is no bone to attach her leg to so she is in terrible constant pain . We are afraid she will eventually just get addicted to the pain pills but there is nothing else we know of to be done for her

1. going by her AGE, certain points which one has to remember are:

. As the age advances, kidney functions decreases so is drug/creatinine clearance, so giving her medicines/painkillers will only increase the drug toxicity and creatinine levels, thus causing renal dysfunction.

PS. check regularly for kidney function like glomerular filtration rate [GFR], blood urea and Serum creatinine values, as the dose has to be reduced if filtration reduces and values increases.

. As Rheumatoid Arthritis is still there, and because it is an Autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks the joint linings thus has resulted in joint destruction and deformity. [other cause could be hip osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, osteoporosis, so if possible get an Orthopedic Surgeon opinion]

2. As the doctor has already explained the prognosis regarding surgical intervention, it will require a team of specialist [ Rheumatologist/ Physiotherapist, Nutritionist, Primary care provider [PCP] for comprehensive
management.
