How Can Rhinovirus Infection In An Infant Be Treated?

Hi my 4month old daughter has been diagnosed with Rhino virus and iv been told she doesn't need antibiotics? My son had this when he was a baby and was in hospital for 3 weeks I'm just wondering what I can do for her and if I was told correctly that no medications needed. I am very worried that she will end up in hospital like my son did. Apart from Panadol is there anything else I can do thank you. Regards Belinda

Hello,
Thanks for trusting Healthcaremagic!
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.

Rhino viral infection is quite common in infants and it is called as"common cold". You don't need to worry regarding this as it subside with supportive treatment and chances for complication is very rare.
You can try the following as a first line things:-
1.You can give her paracetamol syrup, dose of which depends on weight of your baby. Tepid sponging with tap water can also be tried to reduce the temperature.
2.Nasal decongestants like saline nasal drops can be given in case of blocked nostrils.
3.Adequate breast feeding is necessary to clear up the infection.
Most of the cases resolve with in few days with this supportive measures. Antibiotics are not effective against viral infections like common cold.
If symptoms persist despite all these consult a pediatrician and get evaluated.
Hope I have answered your query.
Regards.
