How Can Scabies Be Treated?

hi! i am diagnosed to have scabies spread over my skin and treating this for 1week already. The doctor gave me permethrin shampoo and Cetaphil lotion to use. I would like to ask if permethrin cream/lotion is more appropriate to cure this because I don t see any improvement thus it continues to lay eggs and i m afraid to pass it to everyone on our house and to my classmates starts 4weeks from now. And what soap will you advise me to use and other stuff i need to remember, like with foods or clothing, to stop this spreading. Thank you for understanding!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Scabies treatment involves eliminating the infestation with medications. You usually apply the medication over all your body, from your neck down, and leave the medication on for at least 8 hours.

Medications commonly prescribed for scabies include:
1) Permethrin cream, 5% (Elimite). Permethrin is a topical cream that contains chemicals that kill scabies mites and their eggs.
2) Lindane lotion. This medication, also a chemical treatment, is recommended only for people who can't tolerate other approved treatments, or for whom other treatments didn't work.
3) Crotamiton (Eurax). This medication is available as a cream or a lotion. It's applied once a day for 2 days.

Some advices that I can give to you are:
• Cool and soak your skin. Soaking in cool water or applying a cool, wet washcloth to irritated areas of your skin may minimize itching.
• Apply soothing lotion like Calamine lotion.
• Take antihistamines that relieve the allergic symptoms caused by scabies.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi
