How Can Schizophrenia Be Treated?

I have schizophrenia. The first drug I took, was Aripiprazole and it made me feel lazy in my room. But, maybe it worked a little bit I just didn t notice the difference. However, I stopped taking that and changed my psychiatrist to a public hospital specialist. Then, I started taking Olanzapine (10mg) but it gave me weight gain of about almost 20 kilograms. However, I feel this medicine is the best for my schizophrenia but I was too unmotivated to exercise while I was on it. Currently, I am taking Risperdal (2mg) alongside with supplements such as Sarcosine & N-Acetyl Cysteine. I also take Mangosteen extract (3 pills) at times. The supplements feel as if the effects are fading.... It has been really difficult for me to study or read a text book. The focus and concentration seems imbalance and I feel I cannot move forward in my education if this keeps on persisting. Are there any techniques, drugs, supplements, help, diet, or anything for me to be on track again? I would really like a good education and a good job in my future.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As you have mentioned you are suffering from schizophrenia and initially was started on aripiprazole but it didn't help much. You responded quite well with olanzapine but it caused weight gain. I would not recommend to stop olanzapine just because of weight gain as schizophrenia is not an easy condition to treat. You can add aripiprazole with olanzapine which will control your weight. Meanwhile, you can do some gym, exercise, and proper diet to keep yourself fit and healthy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Prashant Gohil
