How Can Sciatic Pain In The Buttocks Be Treated?

I have had siadic pain down my left buttock and leg for a few years. Been through 3 3-5 month stretches going to pt 2-3 times per week with little to no relief. I now have even more back pain and even chest spasms on top of the leg pain. I ecently had x ray and mri both negative. Even though specialist was certain with a foot weakness test in his office I had a herniated disc. How can I have so much pain and nothing show in my test. 30 year old male and need to get back to normal life

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
Thanks for the query.I understand your concern. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The herniated disc can cause sciatica, when the femoral nerve is irritated at spinal level by herniated disc or pain can arise by spasm of a small muscle (pyriformis ) in sciatic notch & cause sciatic nerve pressure to cause the symptom.

pain medicines with rest till pain is controlled / physiotherapy / vitamin B12 supplements OR surgery is chosen as a line of treatment according to severity of symptoms & condition of patient.

Thanks.
