How Can Sciatica Be Treated?

My husband has been diagnosed with sciatica and said therapy would help and also set him up with a pain
management doctor, who would do an epidural. Our son (who is not a doctor) felt that would be something that should not be the first treatment, not knowing just where the problem lies without a cat scan or MRI.
What would you suggest. My husband is not in favor of an epidural without knowing exactly where the pain is coming from.

Hello,
Thanks for trusting Healthcaremagic!
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.
Sciatica is a pain condition which is quite difficult to cure completely. Many treatment options are available depending upon the severity of the disease.
Epidural is very effective but it is not the first line option. It is generally done once medical management fails.
I suggest you to consult a physiatrist (A doctor specialized in physical medicine and rehabilitation) or an orthopedician and get the following things done:-
1.A detailed physical examination is needed to confirm the diagnosis.
2. Imaging techniques like MRI may be needed to look for any disc herniation or other spine conditions which could cause sciatica.
3.Analgesics like diclofenac or gabapentin can be tried, but long term effects are poor.
4.Physiotherapy is quite effective in controlling the pain.
If all the above mentioned methods fail,we may go for surgical interventions which include:-
1.Spinal injection of corticosteroid or local anesthetics,Spinal injections are very effective at releasing the pressure on your sciatic nerve and temporarily reducing your pain for a few months.
2.Epidural injection can also be tried especially pain in more over the legs.
3.Very rarely open surgical correction may be needed in some spine conditions.

You can try the following home remedies to control pain.
1.Apply warm compresses.
2.Avoid unhealthy gym training.
3.Practice yoga and stretching exercises.

Hope I have answered your query.
Wishing you good health.

Regards.
