Pediatrician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor'. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Some physical causes of bad behavior in a young child include:
-a certain type of seizure
-diarrhea due to an illness that causes inflammation of the large intestine
-brain tumor
-various medications

A child can learn bad behavior by being allowed to wreck furniture, write on the wall, or ride tricycle around the room. He must have discipline. So when he is stopped from doing inappropriate or harmful things, he will not cry or have a temper tantrum.
Your grandson needs love, affection, and security. When a child is behaving badly, unpleasant, bad tempered, it is then he MOST needs loving.
On some occasions children who injure themselves can have emotional problems.
As soon as he shows any anger or self-injurious behavior, try holding him close to you and comfort him. After 8 to 12 attempts I recommend he be seen by his pediatrician.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be happy to help.
Arnold Zedd, MD, FAAP
