How Can Severe Cramps In The Legs Be Treated?

I suffer from bad leg cramping almost daily, sometimes I can just walk it off while other times I am in the shower with towels and HOT water for 30-60 minutes before the pain subsides. It is like some muscles are constricting and others are stretched. This can happen from my buttocks all the way down. Additionally I have trouble with both hands and feet. The big toes or thumbs bend back, but my hands or feet are cupping. I have taken quinine, Baclofen, and Flexeril. Nothing seems to help. I usually walk 1-2 miles per day. The days when I don t walk are better. Anything I should be asking or taking?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

First of all, it's sad to know what you had been going through lately.

Based on the history you have shared, you need to get serum electrolytes checked especially serum potassium, calcium and magnesium levels and any abnormalities should be corrected with a proper replacement.

Endocrine disorders like Thyroid or adrenal issues should be ruled out. Replacement for D3 B12 B6 and folic acid may be needed. Meanwhile, muscle relaxants like tizanidine or orphenadrine may be used.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
