How Can Severe Depression While Suffering From Bipolar Disease Be Treated?

My best friend has been diagnosed bipolar for 50+ years. She pretty much had it under control with a few ups and downs. Now she is in a private home due to the fact that she is rapid cycling. When she s up she s manic and in a few weeks drops to depression and stays in bed. It is so hard to be with her as both conditions have communication problems. She has had her Meds changed when up then again when down. I wish I knew how to deal with her. Any help will be great

Hello,

Bipolar disease, by definition, can have depression with it. The medications tend to be slightly different than unipolar depression.

Paroxetine, Mirtazepine might be a bit more commonly used in bipolar depression. Also, adding a mood stabilizer to an anti-depressant is more commonly done in bipolar depression.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
