How Can Severe Earache Be Treated?

My teenage son has had a history of ruptured eardrums. On a trip he just put swimmers drops in his ear and immediately had serious pain. We figured that his eardrum is ruptured again. How long will the pain last? And is there anything we can do other than rinsing the ear with sterile water and giving him Advil.
