How Can Severe Headache Be Treated?

I have had a severe throbbing headache over the left ear for about 12 hours. I would go to the doctor if was not 3am. Motrin does not work. Ice packs do not work. TMJ massage and chi gong exercises help a bit. It could be temporal arteritis but I can t be sure. I want immediate relief and intend to see a doctor in the morning. Any advice you can give?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, as you are not getting any relief from ice packs or Motrin, you may need injectable or prescription pain killers.
I doubt it is Temporal arteritis as you don't mention any symptoms other than headache. TA is characterised by visual disturbances, loss of appetite, fatigue.
So I believe you either keep applying ice packs, TMJ massages and take a pain killer Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen or go to the ER if the pain is unbearable as there is not much specific information available from your complaints here.
Hope you fell better soon, thank you.
