My wife is in the 7th week with shingles, blisters and rash have just about cleared up, but the nerve pain is tremendous. She s taking prescription Gabapentin(100mg) at bedtime, L-Lysine(500mg), vitamin D-3 K-2. Is there a cream or oil that can be used to reduce her pain. 68 yrs old

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Shingles can cause excruciating pain that is difficult to treat with common analgesics. Gabapentin is the commonly prescribed drug but she is already on it. She can take Tramadol and Paracetamol combination which is found to have good results in shingles. Ointments doesn’t offer much results but you can try Acyclovir ointments which might decrease the disease severity and healing will be faster.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain
