What Causes Nerve Pain After Treating Shingles In The Elderly?
I had chicken pox as a child and the shingles vac. at about age 65. I am 72 and have recently had a mild case of shingles with a lot of nerve pain but not much rash. that was about 3-4 months ago. I am having similar nerve pain today. Can you get shingles again? Do I need a booster for my shingles vaccine? thank you.
Hello. Yes, one can get shingles more than once, but you may have what's called post-herpetic syndrome, where the nerve involved is still inflamed after the rash disappears.
A second vaccine wouldn't help here, but ask your doctor for a prescription for either Neurontin or Lyrica, both of which are very effective with the nerve pain.
