How Can Severe Pain After A Leg Surgery Be Treated?

A friend of mine who fought in vietnam had a major leg wound. He just recently had surgery(again) after a fall and wa hopitalized for 9 months. He is home now almost a year later. I know he s had chronic pain, but he sounded really groggy at 6:30 pm on the phone. I mconcerned he is still taking strong painmeds. In hospital he would receive injections he said were 20 mililiiters, but I don t know what. I just want to be sure he is ok, but I worry. Should he be stoned so early at night? Not even bedtime? Thanks

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Some pain medications can cause excessive drowsiness but it would also depend on the time that he goes to bed as well.

If he is using a lot of pain medications that are interacting to increase drowsiness, then this would need to be assessed by his doctor.

I hope this helps.
