hi I had a car accident I 1991 mess up ankle , they clean out the cartilidge between the ankle and put in screws and it is killing me all the time and now I have artrithis in it. they wanted to fuse the joint but I refused because I was young at the time. now it is very painful and I cant walk long distance . what does the replacement entail?
Since in the car accident in 1991, you damaged your ankle joint, and was operated; now that you are having arthritis of the joint and pain while walking, the best method of management is to get and ankle joint prosthesis replacement surgery done. The prosthesis is made of Titanium, and one part is fixed to the lower end of Tibia. The other part is fixed over the Talus bone. You would be pain free and would be able to walk comfortably. This is the best option. A lesser option is to fuse the ankle joint, and this will remove your pain. However your gait would be affected to an extent. You would have to wear custom made rocker bottom footwear.
